Air drier is basically a filter to take moisture out of the air. As with any filter, they do need to be replaced from time to time. Once or twice a year is probably enough. If you drain your air tanks out and are consistently seeing a lot of water, I'd start with changing out the cartridge on the drier.

After you get the filter loose enough so that it will turn freely you can remove the dryer assembly and lay it over towards you. Remove the old filter and clean the dryer mounting surface. There is a small inner o-ring and a large outer rubber gasket/o-ring. Coat these with air brake grease and place into the grooves.

Posts: 24,041. The air dryer is located above the driver's side rear duals. It's mounted to the frame in such a way that you can't remove the cartridge cover (too close to the floor). Consequently, you have to disconnect the airlines to the air dryer, unbolt it, remove it and change the cartridge on the work bench.

The only air dryer is part of the chassis air system, at the output of the air compressor. FCCC (Freightliner Custom) uses a Haldex PurEst dryer. It's a desiccant cartridge and needs replacement roughly every 3 years in a motorhome. Changing it is an entirely separate procedure from the engine air filter.
