All that glitters... Acid mine drainage: The toxic legacy of gold
When it rains, the tailings dumps, especially those that are being reworked for secondary gold recovery, produce sulfuric acid. With pH levels as low as two (pure water is neutral with a pH of seven), the sulfuric acid mobilizes aluminum, heavy metals and uranium from the rock, and produces iron oxide as a byproduct.
